Kelly Maker (@kellymaker) is a photographer and artist based in Melbourne, Australia.
Entirely self taught, Kelly has cultivated a unique and recognisable form of digital manipulation she calls ‘edits’. Her work encompasses a collage style, made by hand and digitally, she has worked for various companies and influencers to create eye catching content, launching her into the art scene of Australia and abroad in under a year.
Her photography works both on it’s own, and in conjunction with her art. Utilising digital and 35mm photography, Kelly finds inspiration in everyday life, aiming to capture her subject in a unique way, focusing on whats within and without, understanding that the model is both human and a work of art, waiting to be dressed up or dressed down, understood or confused through the lens.
What was the first thing you did when you woke up this morning?
Made myself a very large coffee.
What song best describes your personality?
I’m a Pisces so you would need 10 different songs per day to describe my personality!
What was your first ever job?
I worked in a Deli in my home town when I was 14.
Which word do you think is the strangest?
This is funny because literally any word can become strange if you say it enough times.
What’s your guilty pleasure movie?
I watch Fantastic Mr Fox when I feel sad and I’ll probably watch Moana at least once a fortnight.
Where do you love to travel?
Europe is my favourite so far and of course I love traveling around Australia.
When are you most creative?
In the middle of the night between 10pm and 4am.
Where do you draw your inspirations from?
Everything around me inspires me, including other artists/photographers/filmmakers/writers the list is endless.
What has been the funnest project you’ve ever worked on?
Trying to do a self portrait series with lots and lots of real glitter. It did not work out to say the least.
What advice would you give yourself if you started all over again?
I’d go back maybe 3 years and tell myself to ditch that dumb boy and follow your dreams sooner.
Best beach in Australia?
There is a beach in Phillip Island, however I won’t name it as it is the most secluded and beautiful place I have ever been thus far, only the locals and those in the know, know it and I really want to keep it that way!
Best Aussie saying?
If you ever hear an Aussie say ‘chuck another shrimp on the barbie’ they are 100% ‘taking the piss’ (is that a saying? It means joking/pulling your leg) I wish we had some great sayings that I could roll out but sadly, we don’t, we just have single words to describe a whole scenario.
I actually just googled Aussie Phrases and I’m ashamed at how many of them I use on a daily basis!
