“The Bec & Bridge girl has always been a rule breaker but this season she is really pushing the boundaries. Spirited and bold, she has retained the innocence of youth. Alluring and enigmatic but seriously cheeky.” – Bec & Bridge Resort 17/18 Meow Meow.

We recently went backstage with Bec & Bridge at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia for AUST. Magazine and interviewed the designers on their new collection Meow Meow.

Inspiration behind the collection?
We began by exploring the work of Matisse, and were drawn to his use of colour, innovative use of light and layering. From here we were inspired to work with playful combinations of colours and interesting textures. The collection embodies the Bec & Bridge girl who, oozes that cool girl French attitude and sense of confidence.

Talk us through your design process.

We draw inspiration from all sorts of things and places. We are inspired by travel, architecture, music and art. Normally one of us, or the girls in the design team, are particularly inspired by something and this provides a starting point. Things tend to naturally evolve from there.

What’s something new in this collection that Bec & Bridge hasn’t done before?
The Bec & Bridge woman is alluring, cheeky and confident she has a sense youthfulness and isn’t afraid to break the rules and have fun. This collection she is embracing bold colour, dramatic ruffles and sculptural detailing along with some unexpected leather styles.

What advice would you give yourself if you started in fashion all over again?

Try not to compare yourself to others or to be something you’re not. Focus on who you are as a brand and creating your own brand identity.
